What about the "spray" on hair color? That would be a good compromise for dad. You get to wear the color you want occasionally, and he knows it isn't permanent! You can find it at most fun shops, or even in the party section in Wal-Mart.

Or oyu could go to the hair dye section with your dad and show him that there are different levels of hair dye, from temporary to permanent, maybe the two of you could agree on one that is temporary - that washes out in like 6 weeks or so...

For one. Hair doesnt make you emo.. Emo is an emmotion. If you want it "edgier" get it raiserd cut. Or some long bangs. But if you really thinkn what you look like makes you emo than your probally just a poser. wear it how you like not what you act like

cut it shoulder length and maybe highlights or lowlights or u can part ur hair on the side.

I'm not exactly sure what the emo look entails, but long, dark brown hair fits in with the dark, mysterious look. I wouldn't think you'd have to change your hairstyle to be emo.
